Composting isn't the fringe activity that it was once considered to be. With the new drive to live green, everyone looks for ways that they can add green living, easily and cheaply, to their lives.
Creating compost with a compost tumbler or compost bin is an easy way for your family to naturally reduce landfill waste and has the added benefit of providing compost - what many gardeners consider an almost miraculous addition to any garden.

Envirocycle Backyard Composter

By JeffDavis

Envirocycle-Backyard-ComposterOn sale for $139.00 at Amazon.com, the Envirocycle Backyard Compost Tumbler is an economical and popular compost tumbler.

Compact in size, the Envirocycle Backyard Compost Tumbler is made of durable, recycled plastic with a lockable lid that is intended to prevent small animals from getting into your composting material.

The EnviroCycle's main purpose is to make turning and aerating straightforward and easy enough to accelerate decomposition. With a regular compost heap, going through the process of turning it several times a week is an effort. So plenty of folks put the chore off and as a consequence, their experience with compost making is slow. With the Envirocycle Backyard Compost Tumbler you can turn the heap in ten seconds and without opening the lid. Our friend report that they've spun their compost tumbler for about a minute and a half a day (which is maybe a little excessive) - and that they've had good success with their composting results.

The best position to operate this compost tumbler from is to stand facing one side. From the side, you can easily push one side down while pulling the opposite side up. However as the load you put into the Envirocycle Backyard Compost Tumbler gets heavier, the harder it'll become to turn. Fortunately, when the compost tumbler gets a little too hard to turn, you can just rock it back and forth and get most of the same benefit of completely turning the tumbler over and over. At the bare minimum, change the side of the heap you leave at the bottom.

The all-important aeration is provided through small holes that have been drilled into the drum, which is indented just enough to give the user a decent chance of gripping and rolling the Envirocycle Backyard Compost Tumbler, which is recommended by Envirocycle to be done at least three times a week.

A unique feature of the Envirocycle Backyard Compost Tumbler is the ability to collect "compost tea" in its base. As the decomposition process occurs with the compost material, nutrient-rich liquid plant food is produced and up to 5 gallons of the stuff can be collected in the base. This is an extremely useful feature that I wish more composter units had.

The EnviroCycle tumbler includes a base to gather and store liquid compost tea draining from the composting material.

This occurs through two slits in the tumbler that are left resting over the base or in a similar fashion thru the door.

Two stops in the base container permit draining, and one stop can permit drainage directly to ground. If the container becomes full you must replace the stops to empty the liquid properly. There is a design problem here, because when full and level you won't take the screw cap from the pouring spout without spilling contents. Lean the container back and rest the front on a brick to pour before opening the spout.

The Envirocycle Backyard Compost Tumbler does not have to be stored on its base (but do choose a level surface). The base has a hand hole underneath to make moving easier.

From the manufacturer:

The Envirocycle composter and compost tea maker produces quality compost quicker and easier than conventional composters by its rolling and mixing action which keeps the ingredients well mixed and aerated. The Envirocycle makes compost tea, a rich organic liquid plant food so much appreciated by the gardeners. This liquid can be collected in the unique composteamaker base.

Dimensions

Height 77.5 centimeters, width 65 centimeters, depth 51.5 centimeters. We calculate the max tumbler volume at 179 Liters or 6.3 Cubic feet; Note: we measured the maximum base contents, with entry holes open of course, to be 12.5 liters. When the base is up-ended with holes closed it probably holds nearly twice that.

With the small size and correspondingly small price of the Envirocycle Backyard Composter, this could be a perfect compost tumbler for the new compost-making hobbyist or for someone who wouldn't mind buying several units to keep a steady supply of compost coming in.

We like this very convenient composter. It keeps rodents, skunks and snakes from access to the compost and is easy to use. The preparation of compost takes a bit longer than advertised (8-10 weeks is about right).

As the description asserts : “Compact, sturdy and user-friendly” – and that about sums it up.

I will not truly imagine paying an identical quantity for fundamentally a plastic ( or wooden ) box that needs additional work to keep things stirred up. Just fill it and spin it, if it loaded itself it might be perfect. The “tea” catcher is also a massive perk in my book. About the single thing I want would be to have it a little bigger ( not everybody would need that though ).

This composter looks great, but I have worms in my BioOrb composter, and I don’t want them to die in a solid drum with little aeration. I would like to catch the compost “tea” though. I need a 2nd or even 3rd composter in order to deal with our fall leaves and compost that I collect at work every day and from our own garden and household. But I do not want to kill my worms-they’re my helpers. Would they survive in your EnviroCycle Backyard composter, in a shaded location over the summer?

As long as the temperature stays within a favorable range for the little beasties, it should be ok!

I have been using the Envirocycler a little over 6 months now and I have found a few issues with it. (1) The door/hatch will let some compost leak out when I am rotating it. I don’t know if it is due to the way it connects to the drum or the fact that it is a single point attachment and a single point hook. I would like to see a better hinge design. (2) If I do over fill it the compost becomes hard to keep centered when tumbling, likes to drift to one side or the other and then the rollers get a little clogged with the compost that leaks out from the door. (3) The final issue I have is with the compost tea part of the build. The cap for the tank is very poorly fitted. The cap is very loose and the thread that are supposed to hold the cap are not very precise. This in conjunction with the way the tank is formed makes it a little hard to empty the tank without having a lot of the compost tea sloshing around when I try to pour it out. With all of these faults that I have pointed out ( and I have to admit that these are just issues that I have encountered) I would still say that the Envirocycler is a very good product.

One additional comment… I wanted to see if adding red wiggles would help with the composting. I bought a box of worms at the local bait shop and now my composter is teaming with worms. I just have a hard time “SAVING” them when it is time to remove compost.

More than 10 years ago I bought my first envirocycle composter. A wonderful product and I loved it, except that after a few years the hinge portion of the door broke. I bought another one and now the same thing has happened. I do not know why as it has not been abused in any way. Has anyone else had the same problem? Does anybody have a way to fix this? The composter is too expensive to buy yet a third one!

I have the tumbler and a problem. The tea holder is leaking. Iam not sure why. There are two holes in the bottom of the hea holder. Why is that? It leaks out onto my porch. Help!
